Government agencies, fleet owners, and individual owner-operators using medium- and heavy-duty trucks (MHD) and other vehicle types powered by internal combustion engines (ICE) already have numerous enticements to transition to zero-emissions (ZE) fleets by switching to electric vehicles (EV). For starters, decarbonizing transportation on a path toward net-zero emissions yields societal benefits through reduced pollution and improved human health while providing fleet owners and operators with improved risk management, lower fleet maintenance and fuel costs, and a more positive public image as better environmental stewards. Additionally, recent government incentives as well as legislation centered on electric vehicles are helping hasten the shift, while lending further credence to the notion that not only is change coming in the form of EV, it’s already here for fleets still relying primarily on ICE.
